      FAQs About Non-Toxic Car Seats

No, GREENGUARD checks emissions, not ingredients. It sadly does not test for flame retardant ingredients, so car seats (or other items) that are GREENGUARD Gold or GREENGUARD certified can still contain flame retardants. Don't let brands trick you into thinking that just because an item is GREENGUARD certified, that it's completely safe. Here at Modern Nursery, we will not sell any item with added chemical flame retardants, so if it's on our site, it means it's FR-free.

It means no flame-retardant chemicals were added. Most car seats are treated with these chemicals to pass flammability rules, and they migrate out of the foam and fabric into the dust your child breathes and touches. They are linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and developmental harm. Most seats we carry are fully flame-retardant free; a few have no added flame retardants but a possible trace carryover from a shared facility. Either way, nothing we carry is treated with added flame retardants, and each seat is clearly labeled so you know what you're buying.

No single label does it; it's the whole build. We start with no added flame retardants, the biggest chemical concern in car seats. From there we look for GREENGUARD Gold certification, which limits the chemical emissions a seat can off-gas, and we favor natural materials like wool and organic cotton where a seat allows. Every seat in this collection clears the fire-retardant bar first; the certifications and materials tell you how clean the rest of it is.

To pass flammability testing the least expensive way. Chemical treatment is the cheap, well-established route, so it became the industry default long before anyone examined what those compounds do once they migrate into household dust. Naturally flame-resistant materials cost more and are harder to source, which is exactly why cleaner seats carry a premium. We think it's worth it. One is fully free; the other may carry trace amounts. It's a real distinction and most retailers blur it. Flame retardant free means the whole car seat, fabric and foam, is made without these chemicals. No added flame retardants means none were used in manufacturing, but trace carryover from the supply chain is possible. We carry both, and we label which is which, because "non-toxic" shouldn't be a word you have to take on faith.
