Nuna TRIV next vs TRIV lx: What's Different?

Nuna TRIV next vs TRIV lx: What's Different?

TRIV lx for newborns and groceries. The TRIV next is lighter.

Shopping the Nuna TRIV series stroller and can't work out what separates the next from the lx? We've got you. In our rundown of Nuna's everyday single strollers we flagged the TRIV next's one catch: before about six months you're clicking in a PIPA series infant car seat or adding the SWIV & TRIV Series Bassinet + Stand (sold separately). The TRIV lx skips all that. Its seat reclines into carriage mode to accommodate newborns, and its basket holds 22 lb.

What's the difference between the Nuna TRIV next and TRIV lx?

Newborn-ready carriage mode, 22 lb basket, never-flat tires, carbon-reinforced frame.

Nuna's spec panel labels the TRIV next "Up to 50 lbs" and the TRIV lx "Birth to 50 lbs," and almost everything below follows from that one line. The TRIV lx takes a newborn in its own seat. The next requires a PIPA series infant car seat or a bassinet first. The lx's basket holds 22 lb to the next's 10, and it rides on large, never-flat tires over a carbon fiber reinforced frame. The next gets one thing back: a pushbar with five height positions to the lx's four.

Which Nuna TRIV works from birth with no add-ons?

The TRIV lx. The next needs a PIPA or bassinet.

On the lx, the backrest drops to Nuna's near-flat carriage position and the calf support raises to close the leg opening, with closure flaps that fasten to the seat frame. Nuna calls that newborn carriage mode. Nuna's guidance for the TRIV next, like we said above, is a PIPA series infant car seat or bassinet until about six months, and the six months go faster than anybody warns you. After that, your baby is in the stroller seat and you're done hauling a car seat around.

Two things turn that into a real problem. You're skipping the infant car seat and going straight to a convertible. Or you already own an infant car seat from another brand. Either stroller's ring adapter fits Nuna's PIPA line and nothing else, so if that's you, the TRIV next's only way through the early months is the SWIV & TRIV Series Bassinet + Stand (sold separately), which both strollers take. Nuna clears that bassinet for overnight sleep on its stand, which is a bonus!

If you still want to use a PIPA car seat or bassinet on the TRIV lx, Nuna's thought of that, too – the necessary car seat adapter is included with your purchase, and the bassinet clicks right in, no adapter needed.

How much can each Nuna TRIV's basket hold?

The lx holds 22 lb. The next stops at 10.

The TRIV next's basket capacity tops out at 10 lb. It'll take the diaper bag. It won't take the diaper bag and the farmers market.

The lx's basket matches the SWIV and the VIAA cabn at 22 lb, with a zippered pocket inside sized for a tracking device. (It will also accept a pacifier, two board books, a half-eaten cracker, and the car keys you were certain were in your coat.)

What do you give up with the Nuna TRIV lx?

2.7 lb. Open, it's larger. Folded, within 1.5 inches.

Nuna publishes the TRIV next at 18.4 lb and the TRIV lx at 21.1 lb. You'll feel those extra 2.7 lb on the lift into a trunk, every day, for years. Open, the lx is the larger stroller in all three dimensions.

Folded, they're almost the same stroller. Matched largest side to largest side, the TRIV next measures 24, 22.5 and 15 inches; the lx measures 24, 23 and 16.5. An inch and a half on one dimension is the whole penalty. And once the lx is folded, Nuna says the strap you pulled to fold it doubles as a carry handle.

For our own trunk we'd take the lx, and grumble about those 2.7 lb every time it goes in the car. We'd still take it, though we'd understand completely if you're the one carrying it up to a third-floor apartment and you land somewhere else.

What do the Nuna TRIV next and TRIV lx have in common?

Same fold, same buckle, same suspension, same bassinet connection.

Underneath the badges these are the same stroller, which is why nobody can tell them apart in a photo. Both seats face either way, and they fold with the seat still attached and stand up on their own. The suspension is identical, all-wheel plus a spring under the seat, so whatever ride difference you feel is coming from the tires. Either one takes any PIPA series infant car seat on an included ring adapter that folds away with the stroller, and the bassinet is the same for both.

Both use Nuna's MagneTech buckle, where magnets guide the clips into the catch so you're not lining them up by hand, and a no-rethread harness that converts between three and five points as your child grows. Neither includes a rain cover, and the same TRIV Series Rain Cover (sold separately) fits both.

Both are fire-retardant free, GREENGUARD Gold-certified and free of PFAS. It's the first box either one had to tick with us, long before the recline or the basket.

Which Nuna TRIV should you buy?

Birth or big basket, buy the lx. Neither, buy the next.

Buy the TRIV lx if a newborn is going to ride in the stroller seat itself before any infant car seat clicks on top, or if you shop with your stroller as much as you walk with it.

Buy the TRIV next if your baby is already sitting up, or a PIPA seat is in the plan anyway, and you'd rather carry the lighter one. It's the lightest everyday stroller Nuna makes, and if a PIPA is going in anyway, the lx's carriage mode is a feature you'd barely use.
